On June 8, SIFEC International School hosted a Dragon Boat Festival cultural workshop to introduce students to Chinese intangible cultural heritage and traditional festival customs. Chinese and international students took part in the event in pairs, with Chinese-language presentation supported by AI-powered English interpretation and a simultaneous YouTube livestream.
The Dragon Boat Festival, celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, is one of China's major traditional festivals and was inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2009. Sachet-making, a traditional custom associated with blessing and well-being, served as the main hands-on activity of the workshop. The instructor introduced the origins of the festival, customs such as dragon boat racing and hanging mugwort, and demonstrated the sachet-making process step by step.
Under the teacher's guidance, students worked together on threading, embroidery, filling sachets with herbs, stitching, and attaching ornaments. Through the making process, they not only experienced the beauty of traditional craft but also engaged in cross-cultural communication and mutual learning.
More than a cultural activity, the workshop became a bridge between students from different backgrounds. Through this warm and interactive experience, participants gained a deeper appreciation of traditional Chinese culture while building friendship and connection.
